保险事故是保险合同中载明的危险发生后，所造成的损害或伤害后果。保险人对这种后果的发生负有赔偿经济损失或保险金给付的责任。在我国为区分财产保险和人身保险，人们习惯将人身保险的保险事故称为保险事件。即在人寿保险中被保险人的契约规定年限内死亡或生存，在健康保险中被保险人的疾病、分娩及其所造成的残废或死亡，在伤害保险中被保险的意外伤害及其所致的残废或死亡，造成保险人给付被保险人或受益人保险金的行为统称为 “保险事件”。它不同于财产保险所泛指的不可预料，或不可抗拒的偶然事故所发生的保险人进行经济损害赔偿的行为。
