踹腿在徒手搏斗中，跟直拳有一样的重要性，也是直线进攻型的技法。属于腿法中的三大“母腿”（蹬、踹、鞭）之一；而且攻击威力特别大，杀伤力最强，往往使对手采用了阻挡措施也不能避免被踹中或踹伤，若以较远的地方冲过去，还可利用冲击的惯性来增加腿击力量，形成腾空踹腿，是腿法中追击效果最好的腿法。
