五千言，典故名，典出《史记》卷六十三《老庄申韩列传》：“ 老子乃著书上下篇，言道德之意五千馀言而去，莫知所终。”后以“五千言”为 老子 《道德经》的代称。
于是老子乃著道德五千言以授之。
《老子》五千言，使用动词较多，其中单音动词占大多数，复音动词较少。
