书信是写给具体收信人的私人通信。除了保护有关的私人秘密外，一般对属于书面作品性质的信件也给予版权保护。在许多国家，实际上将所有书信当作文学作品，如法国、印度、英国、美国。有些版权法明确地把书信列举在受保护的作品之内（如巴西、尼日利亚、菲律宾等国）。还有一些国家的版权法有保护书信的专门条款，如阿根廷、哥伦比亚、哥斯达黎加等国。许多国家版权法规定，书信要有创造性，不是简单地交流情况，也不是一般性的通信，才能受到保护，如奥地利、比利时、德国、海地、意大利、日本等。
