透明至淡绿色液体，不溶于水，混溶于油脂，溶于乙醇、乙醚、丙酮、苯及碱溶液。乙二硫醇可由1,2-二溴乙烷与硫醇反应后水解制得。可用于有机合成和生化研究。用作金属络合剂等。
