乍得湖是非洲第四大湖，内陆淡水湖，位于非洲中北部，乍得、喀麦隆、尼日尔和尼日利亚4国交界处，乍得盆地中央；由大陆局部凹陷而成，为第四纪古乍得海的残余；湖面积随季节变化，雨季时可达2.2万平方千米，旱季时可缩小一半以上，湖的海拔281米；西部深，东部浅，平均深度1.5米，最大深度12米。水位年变幅0.6～0.9米。
