义务教育(compulsory education)，义务教育是指国家统一实施的适龄儿童、少年必须接受的教育。1986年4月12日，六届全国人大四次会议通过的《中华人民共和国义务教育法》规定，我国实行九年制义务教育。1986年7月1日起，九年制义务教育开始在全国推行，适龄的“儿童和少年”必须接受九年的义务教育从此成为法定义务。这标志着中国已确立了义务教育制度。
