民国时期民营出版发行企业。1917年由沈知方在上海创办。1921年，从独资企业改组为股份有限公司，设编辑所、发行所和印刷厂，在各大城市设分局30余处。沈知方任总经理。初期，以出版小说为主。从1924年起，编辑出版中小学教科书，与商务印书馆、中华书局出版的教科书三足鼎立。1934年，因经济周转不灵，沈知方被迫退职，由陆高谊任总经理。抗日战争期间，林汉达主编的英文文学读本颇负盛名。1946年，李石曾出任总经理。1950年宣告结束。共出书约5500余种。
