不定芽是植物从茎的节间、根或叶土生出的芽，如洋槐根上、落地生根的叶片上形成的芽。一些植物体受伤后，也可在伤口附近产生不定芽，如秋海棠叶上，或砍伐后的柳树桩上所产生的芽。在生产实践上，西艺工作者利用秋海棠、香叶天竺葵、泡桐等植物的叶或根容易产生不定芽的特点，通过扦插可以进行大置的繁殖。在植物组织培养过程中，为了实现植物工厂化生产，利用植物生长调节剂等多种调控手段，使培养物能快速、大量地产生不定芽，是实现快速无性繁殖的重要途径之一。。
