上覆岩层，一种赋存在煤层之上的岩层，也可称为顶板。赋存在煤层下方的岩层称为底板。在掘进巷道之前，地下的岩层或煤层是实体的，上部岩层的重量压在下部岩层上，处于平衡状态。这时候岩体不变形，也不会移动。我们在煤层或岩层中掘进一条巷道后，巷道顶部的岩层就要往下落。
