Heart pounding, eyes bulging out of his head, breathing rapid and raspy, yet Everette found that, despite his racing heart, his mind was clear and calm. He had slipped into the serenity the Gunman provided. Everette was free to plan and think while his body acted on instinct, reflex and pure adrenaline. He remained detached as the Gunman moved from room to room on the first floor, aiming around the vacant kitchen, scanning a dining room, and the hallway. The first floor was empty. Two sets of stairs were discovered: a set of rickety wooden ones to the basement, and some carpeted ones leading upstairs.
