Three police investigations are currently examining allegations of phone hacking, e-mail hacking and corrupt payments to police at the News of the World and other papers owned by News International, the UK arm of News Corp.
Brooks, formerly chief executive of News of the World's parent company, News International, part of Murdoch's News Corp. empire, also faces a charge of perverting the course of justice.
Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp business owns the News of the World's publisher News International, is due to arrive in the UK to take charge of handling the phone-hacking crisis.
