When we are communicating with people whose SECONDARY language is English, weneed to make sure that we do not use 'figures of speech' and regional terms.
"Just as some people have taken a perverse pride in not understanding mathematics, so we have taken a perverse pride in the fact that we do not speak foreign languages, and we just need to speak louder in English, " he said.
"With cultural and political strength in the devolved assemblies in Parliament in Scotland, we really do need to reinforce the Englishness of the English but in a comprehensive and open way as part of Britishness, " Mr Blunkett said.
