abstract:Walloon (Walon in Walloon) is a Romance language that was spoken as a primary language in large portions (70%) of the Walloon Region of Belgium, in some villages of Northern France (near Givet) and in the northeast part of WisconsinUniversité du Wisconsin : collection de documents sur l'immigration wallonne au Wisconsin, enregistrements de témoignages oraux en anglais et wallon, 1976 University of Wisconsin Digital Collection : Belgian-American Research Collection until the middle of the 20th century. It belongs to the langue d'oïl language family, whose most prominent member is the French language.
Wales's language disputes are certainly nothing to those of Belgium, where personal relations between the Flemish and Walloon communities can be rancorous, or of Quebec, where English-speakers have left in droves. (In fact, the English continue to come to Wales in substantial numbers, something many language activists deplore.) Even those who do not speak the language say they are proud of it.
