The new optional engine on Silverado and Sierra also beats out the 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway yielded by the 5.0L V-8 engine in two-wheel-drive versions of the F-150 and the 14 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway provided by a 4.7L V-8 engine in two-wheel drive versions of Ram.
Smaller and less powerful than Detroit-built pickups, its V-8 engine produces 240 horsepower (the same as a V-6 Honda Accord sedan), while Chevy Silverado owners can get up to 325hp.
When BMW redesigned its iconic M5 performance sedan in 2012, it replaced the prior generation's ten-cylinder engine with a smaller, turbocharged V-8, making the engine 25% more efficient and boosting mileage to 16 mpg from 13 combined city and highway driving.
