On December 20, the United Nations Security Council passed resolution 2085 under Chapter VII of theUNCharter, allowing for the eventual creation and deployment of international troops in Mali.
If either side fails to abide by the terms, then "additional measures" under Article 41 of theUNCharter - which allows for non-military sanctions - will be considered, the resolution says.
