It was designed and built in 1974 by Kunio Maekawa, a pupil of Le Corbusier best known for his public buildings in Tokyo, including the TokyoMetropolitanArtMuseum.
But perhaps the world's most successful at this is New York's MetropolitanMuseum of Art, which has a chain of 40 shops, from Texas to Tokyo, selling replicas of its exhibits though the Met declines to say how much profit these stores make.
