Abstract: This paper discusses rhetorical devices of English idioms. An English idioms is a set expression made of two or more words. The sense of the combination, however, cannot be explained in terms of its constituent parts. The expressions of English idioms are usually forcible, terse and vivid; the same meaning could be set forth in some other ways, but not with equal force and brevity. The rhetorical devices of the idiom can be divided into emphatic repetition, contrast of two alternatives, vivid comparison, allusion and personification. Different rhetorical device used can make the idioms more vigorous and humorous.
