abstract:Szamanka (, The Shaman) is a Polish-French-Swiss film, released in 1996, directed by Andrzej Żuławski and adapted from a screenplay by Manuela Gretkowska. The film, which was controversial upon its release in Poland, is about the obsessive relationship between an anthropology professor and a disturbed woman only known as the "Italian".
Some of Mr. Zulawski's most shocking movies are among his most brilliant, such as the erotic and stomach-turning but richly metaphorical "The Shaman" ("Szamanka, " 1996), which caused a scandal in Poland and was criticized for its depiction of post-Communist unease.
