The name has taken on many forms over the years: Danse du Ventre (French for dance of the belly), Raqs Sharqi (Arabic for dance of the East), La Danse Orientale (French for dance of the East) or simply Middle Eastern Dance. Many dancers don’t like using the term “belly dancing” because of its social stigma: The idea that because some skin may be exposed, it is a “stripper-like” dance.
