Most memorably, and by way of an epilogue perhaps signaling reincarnation for the woman at the center of "Bell, " Ms. Seyama has the climactic theatrical statement.
The often compelling and impressive presence of Ms. Seyama and Mr. Sawamura stand out as the show's highlight, sometimes in striking contrast to the non-Japanese performers who, when they are asked to perform aspects of traditional Japanese dance, do so without evident conviction.
The varied inspirations and the contrast between performers of different training backgrounds make for a mix that, while showcasing some striking moments of dance theater in particular those of Kayo Seyama and Kuniya Sawamura, two traditionally schooled Japanese dancers can confound Japanese and Western viewers alike.
