Daughters who have followed their fathers into politics include Myanmar's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the vice-presidents of Indonesia and the Philippines respectively, Megawati Sukarnoputri and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
"Social instability is always a good excuse for the military to re-establish its centrality in politics and power, " said Maung Zarni, a Myanmar academic and a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics.
