Working in the Universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Freiburg in the 1970s and 1980s, he first hypothesised that papilloma viruses, which cause skin warts, are also the cause of cervical tumours, and then gathered evidence to prove the point.
Such viruses include the human papilloma virus, which can lead to cervical cancer, and Kaposi's sarcoma, which affects patients with HIV.
