Tony Blair sent a senior foreign-policy adviser, Sir NigelSheinwald, to Syria to find out whether President Bashar Assad could be tempted into playing a more pro-Western role.
But speaking to the Guardian, Britain's former ambassador in Washington, Sir NigelSheinwald, said a move away from Europe, or leaving entirely, would diminish the UK's international clout.
