Organisers say the National Eisteddfod can be traced back to 1176 when it is believed that the first festival was held by LordRhys, at his castle in Cardigan.
Speaking at the European premiere of the second Lord of the Rings instalment The Two Towers, Rhys-Davies said the incident was "not his most glorious moment".
