Coach blew the whistle and the game went into play. I calculated every move, and anticipated the pass from Maya when it came. I was already moving, managing to dribble around Kristen without losing the ball. I was three quarters of the way there, almost in the penalty area, and with Fallon and Leeann both trying to tackle me. I couldn't see anyone around me, and had a moment of blind panic, just trying to control the ball and keep it away from both Leeann and Fallon when I heard Casey shouting my name. The pass was a dangerous one, but somehow managed to go to Casey without being intercepted and she was off. As a centre back, Case has more experience and more skill defending rather than attacking, but as she ran with the ball towards the goal, I grew appreciative of her skill attacking as well. An all round good player – I hadn't ever noticed that about Case. She got the goal, and my team was leading. The exuberant displays of joy lasted a second or two, but then the game was on again with the kick off from the other team. Zhen-Li had the ball, but I was close on her heels as she made her way towards the goal. Fouling her was not an option, Coach's eyes were like a hawk, and I knew were closely trained on her two centre forwards. I had to do something, something to tackle her without getting penalized. My opportunity came in the way of a mistimed pass she attempted to AJ, as Sarah intercepted it. She tried to pass it to me, and once I got it, I ended up trying to keep hold of the ball in a defending position as Zhen-Li kept her offense strong. It seemed like she was there, anticipating every turn, and I felt frustration rise. I was running in full pelt though, with the edge of the pitch coming up, and I knew somehow that this had been Zhen-Li’s plan. To get me to somehow take the ball off so that she would get the corner. I hissed in frustration and tried to turn around, guiding the ball around her legs as I spun and tried to run. My kick didn't go far, because it was not a well aimed pass, and I could already see it in my mind's eye as something I'd get hell about from coach when we were done. But somehow, Sarah managed to run and get the ball, and passing it efficiently to Gina.
