Significant effort had gone into distinguishing the two halves of the house. The one on the left-Tommy’s-had been painted a fire engine red that was now faded. Simon Rankin's half was a bright robin's egg blue. Tommy had put on shutters; Simon had not. Although both houses boasted flower boxes in the front windows, on Tommy's side one was broken; Simon's were newer and much large. The roof of Simon's side, with its black asphalt shingles, was graced at the extreme north end by a weather vane. Tommy's roof, covered in snow, had no such ornament. Both sides had yellow brick chimneys of identical height and design, but, while Tommy's sported a rusted TV aerial, Simon had installed a satellite dish.
