When I fall asleep at night, I turn away from gazingat my husband beside me to gaze upon the faces of our children, in plain silver frames on our bedside table (that is, unless one of the three of them has decided to invade our bed, in which case I am gazingat their faces from far too close up).
Standing out on the promenade, gazing out at the statue, I could not help but think about all those who came before me, and how all of us now are struggling together to make names for ourselves in this crazy city.
Part of me was transported back to this same stony spot eight centuries before, gazing in wonder at that tower face in pristine splendour, wrapped in the awe this kingly complex compelled.
