Rio Tinto competes primarily with global metals and mining giants like Vale, BHP, Freeport McMoran and other companies like Cliffs Resources that mine bauxite, copper, coal and iron ore.
Freeport was brought into the deal because junior exploration companies like Serengeti do not have sufficient resources nor the requisite expertise to explore beneath the thick glacial till that covers the region.
