He has also won the National Film Award for best music direction, for the film Refugee (2001), and received the Filmfare Special Jury Award in 2000 for his outstanding contribution to music.
Eventually his luck changed with the success of the movie Baazigar (1993), winning him his first Filmfare Best Music Director Award, which he won again in 2004 for Main Hoon Na.
