科举时代，挑选府、州、县生员（秀才）中成绩或资格优异者，升入京师的国子监读书，称为贡生。意谓以人才贡献给皇帝。明代有岁贡、选贡、恩贡和纳贡；清代有恩贡、拔贡、副贡、岁贡、优贡和例贡。清代贡生，别称“明经”。
