In her remarks at the session on education, Ms. Katherine Muller-Marin, UNESCO Representative to VietNam, said the UN is ready to support VietNam to building a learning society where all citizens, particularly young and disadvantaged people are encouraged to engage in learning throughout their lifetime.
Operating in nine countries Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, VietNam and Zambia the programme has assisted communities in the development of culturally relevant reading materials in local and minority languages.
According to the 2009 Census on Population and Housing, young people aged 10 to 30 years constitute approximately 40 per cent of the population of VietNam, representing an increasingly important proportion of the population.
