Anti-governmentprotesters in Thailand forced the cancellation of the ASEAN and EastAsia summits being held in Pattaya. Some leaders were evacuated byhelicopter. Protests continued in Bangkok, with demonstrators callingfor the resignation of the prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva. ThaksinShinawatra, the former prime minister deposed in a coup in 2006, calledon his followers to stage a “revolution”. After violent confrontations,the protests wound down. Two people died in the trouble.
