Since October the government has encouraged people to buy houses by cutting the minimum mortgage down-payment on their main home from 30% to 20% and by reducing stampduty and other taxes onpropertytransactions.
Stampduty did not apply at all to a quarter of residential propertytransactions, including on homes up to a certain price in deprived areas, said the spokesman.
