The domain is by no means a recognition of statehood, but comes in part from the recommendation of the United Nations, where Palestine has enjoyed permanentobserverstatus since 1974.
Its leaders are frequent visitors to the region and, like nine other countries, including Japan, Singapore and South Korea, it is lobbying for permanentobserverstatus on the Arctic Council.
