The film, adapted by David Lindsay-Abaire from his own play, could have been merely gruelling, but Mitchell keeps nudging scenes away from the obvious, toward the risky brink of comedy look at Howie and another grieving parent (Sandra Oh) getting stoned and giggling their way through group therapy.
