One of the few studies to seek an answer, completed in 1996 at Britain's LeedsUniversity, found that drivers are more cost-conscious than had commonly been thought.
"It's pretty convincing stuff, " commented Piers Forster, professor of climate change at the UK's University of Leeds and a former lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's assessment of factors driving global warming.
But Dr David Clarke, a professor at LeedsUniversity who's studied young people and road crashes, says this has less to do with driver skill than with attitude and experience.
