We took turns by her side, me, Jasper and River. I took Dorian back to my apartment, there was no way he was going to stay in San Clemente by himself, who knew what he'd do? And he had to be close to Mari, I understood that. Uncle Teddy and Aunt Frieda took the next plane home, and Dorian only stayed with me for a night before they were here in Irvine. Aunt Frieda crying, crying, crying, and Uncle Teddy frowning all the time. He was being strong for her, I knew it. Neither Jasper or I could afford to cut anymore classes, so we weren't there for the morning shifts. Uncle Teddy and Aunt Frieda took those. But in the afternoons, it was our turn. The first day, I had no idea what to do. For a while, I just sat there at her bedside staring at her. I knew the doctor had said to talk to her and tell her things or whatever, just like she was Mari, but that was just it…she wasn't Mari. That body lying there, lifeless, wasn't Mari. Mari was full of fun and energy and just life. She lived it to the max – but it most definitely wasn't her time to go just yet.
