The Sonnabend Gallery opened in Paris in 1962 and was instrumental in making American art of the 1960s known in Europe, with an emphasis on American Pop Art.
Before its acquisition in 2007 for an undisclosed price, "Liz #5" belonged tofamedartdealerandcollectorIleanaSonnabend, who wasan earlyadmirerofWarhol.
Although Mr Castelli and his wife Ileana divorced in the early 1960s she married Michael Sonnabend and started her own galleries in SoHo and Paris the couple remained close friends, exchanging ideas and working on joint projects.
