The route north to Belarus is a series of time-capsules, dropped there by a century that was hurrying by: crumbled farmhouses, donkey-drawn carts, hand-ploughs, Soviet monuments to the heroes of the second world war, and the flimsy 1960s buildings that are the depressing reminder of socialism everywhere.
