It isn't enough to compare the spread to its average, Mr. Fridson says, because the average doesn't reflect the current level of defaultrisk, the strength of the economy, the yield on government bonds or the availability of credit.
He pointed out that China has been increasing its holding of euro-denominated government debt and hasn't been selling since the risk of a Greek default became acute.
