Born into poverty in Walton-le-Dale, near Preston, he was acutely aware of the damaging affects of alcohol on the working classes, setting up the temperance movement which he promoted for the rest of his life.
As a result of delays caused by the crash, armed police were required to surround the convoy carrying Dale Cregan to Preston Crown Court, where he is standing trial for the murder of father and son David and Mark Short.
