abstract:The Bow Street Runners have been called London's first professional police force. The force was founded in 1749 by the author Henry Fielding and originally numbered just six.
By the 1840s the old detective-style units formerly run by magistrates, the most famous of which was the BowStreetRunners, had been absorbed, as had the marine unit, although the City of London retains its own police force today.
