Their lives ended in places called BelleauWood, The Argonne, Omaha Beach, Salerno and halfway around the world on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Pork Chop Hill, the Chosin Reservoir, and in a hundred rice paddies and jungles of a place called Vietnam.
Once the Americans came into the Great War they, led by Pershing, a stern man whose ineptness is now known, allowed his brave young, eager infantry to be slaughtered at BelleauWood and other fields by exactly the same stupid idea that attacking infantry could overcome massed machine guns.
