日本本州东北部太平洋岸钢铁城市。属岩手县。市区西部为山地,东临釜石湾。面积444.8平方公里。人口6.1万(1985)。1937年设市。原为滨海渔村,1727年附近发现磁铁矿。1857年建日本第一个高炉。1934年开港。钢铁工业著名。渔业和水产加工亦甚发达。港口可停万吨海轮,进口铁矿石。
