金石学是中国考古学的前身。它是以古代青铜器和石刻碑碣为主要研究对象的一门学科，偏重于著录和考证文字资料，以达到证经补史的目的，特别是其上的文字铭刻及拓片；广义上还包括竹简、甲骨、玉器、砖瓦、封泥、兵符、明器等一般文物。
