谷城县隶属湖北襄阳市，地处襄阳西部，汉江中游西岸，武当山脉东南麓。南依荆山，西偎武当，东临汉水，南北二河夹县城东流汇入汉江，西北、西南三面群山环抱，地势西高东低。东西长69千米，南北宽66千米。国土面积2553平方千米，2012年，总人口（户籍人口）59.3万人，政府驻地城关镇县府街52号。 薤山国家森林公园、中国百大佛教名寺承恩寺、中国著名天主教堂沈垭天主教堂、南河“小三峡”等旅游胜地汇集，谷城被生态学家誉为“绿色生态之乡、避暑度假天堂”。
