诗言志，是我国古代文论家对诗的本质特征的认识。《诗经》的作者关于作诗目的的叙述中就有“诗言志”这种观念的萌芽。作为一个理论术语提出来，最早大约是在《左传·襄公二十七年》记赵文子对叔向所说的“诗以言志”。后来“诗言志”的说法就更为普遍。《尚书·尧典》中记尧的话说：“诗言志，歌永言，声依永，律和声。”《庄子·天下篇》说：“诗以道志。”《荀子·儒效》篇云：“《诗》言是其志也。”
