萜是一大类碳氢化合物，多为有香味的液体，主要是由植物产生的，尤其是裸子植物；但有些昆虫也可以产生萜类，如燕尾蝶。萜类物质往往具有挥发性，可用水蒸气蒸馏或用乙醚提取。 萜类化合物种类繁多，有链形的，环状的，又有饱和程度不同的烯键。萜类经过化学修饰，如氧化，碳链重排，可以形成大量的类萜。很多人把类萜也叫做萜。
