羟乙基淀粉（Hetastarch）是现在临床上广泛使用的人工合成的胶体溶液，同时也是一种天然多糖。羟乙基淀粉（HES）是玉米或土豆中支链淀粉的葡萄糖环经羟乙基化形成的高分子复合物。天然淀粉不能被用作血浆代用品，因为天然淀粉性质不稳定且易被内源性淀粉酶水解。淀粉经羟乙基化后，可以延缓在血液中的分解和消除，显著延长了其在血管内的停留时间。HES具有扩充血容量的作用，健康志愿者输注HES1000ml后10分钟，血容量较输注前平均增加900ml，6小时后减至415ml，24小时后还保持285ml。
